Winter Camping Tips:
You want to change into dry long johns and top and heavy sox and stocking cap
when you get ready to sleep. I wear a dry set of boot liners if temp is below
0. Boots will be frozen as hard as a board in the morning, so an extra pair is
nice, or at least fresh liners. Take liners out when you take boots off so they
can dry more easily. Propane stoves unreliable in cold weather; white gas is
messier but more likely to function. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Shell with
multiple liners is best system. don't bring sidewalk
snow shovel. Scoop has limited value. Avalanche shovel ok; garden spade or
square shovel needed for digging snow cave when snow is hard. Liner socks of
silk, poly, or other synthetic as well as vapor barrier socks are quite useful
and perhaps mandatory when travelling in weather below
10 degrees.
Don't leave anything ouside shelter overnite unless it is jammed upright so it is visible if it
becomes covered by snow. Take shovel inside snow cave so you can dig out if
there is a collapse or drifted door. Burn used toilet paper. Put hot water in
thermos and water bottle before going to bed. It is alot
faster to prepare breakfast if you have water to heat and melt snow rather than
trying to melt snow alone.
