Compensation

Department of Information Systems has been the study focus the classification system whcih the University of Alaska is currently considering. This system would "cluster" like jobs together providing for a single hierarchical classification throughout the entire MAU. According to Janet Jacobs, Executive Director for Human Resources, the system would solidify "ability, qualifications, tasks and responsibilities." Concerns have been raised as to the cost of implementing such a program. Even though Jacobs agrees initial implementation may cost more upfront, the system would eventually save the University money while providing employees with more benefits.

Joseph Sears, Support Center Coordinator for UAS, states that, "I am encouraged by [the staff classification study project] …the new system gives us a model of advancement which will create equality [for the] MAU." Many employees are confused by the current JEF system, particularly those seeking a job-move across departments. According to James Yauney, Human Resource Analyst, "the new classification system will involve grouping like jobs into families, instead of looking at and evaluating them on an individual basis as the JEF system does."

During the August 14th Alliance retreat, several motions were passed prompting recommendations to University of Alaska President, Mark Hamilton.  Among them Robert Sewell, recommended the staff classification program be completed by July 1st, 2002.  James Yauney and Tarah Keeler have been hired to spearhead the classification efforts in addition to hiring a new director of Compensation, Jeannine Senechal.
