Welcome to the Staff Connection

Communication

With a newly elected board, come new ideas, one of which is the Staff Connection.  During the last retreat specific goals were including:  Advocacy, Communication, Compensation and Staff Development.  In keeping with Alliance goals of improved communication, we will distribute the organization's new Staff Connection newsletter on a monthly basis. Please feel free to write us with any questions or comments.

Advocacy

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2002 Edith R. Bullock Prize for Excellence, and are due no later than Dec. 1st.  The purpose of the prize is to recognize and reward an individual who has demonstrated excellence in support of the University of Alaska.  Any individual, regardless of University affiliation, is eligible for nomination for the prize, which carries with it a $15,000 award for the recipient. Nomination forms can be printed, filled out and sent to the following, depending on your constituent group:  Faculty Alliance, Jackie Pflaum; Student Government, Joe Hardenbrook; & Staff Alliance, Robert Sewell.

Compensation

Department of Information Systems has been the study focus for the classification system which the University of Alaska is currently considering. This system would "cluster" like jobs together providing for a single hierarchical classification throughout the entire MAU. According to Janet Jacobs, Executive Director for Human Resources, the system would solidify "ability, qualifications, tasks and responsibilities." Concerns have been raised as to the cost of implementing such a program. Even though Jacobs agrees initial implementation may cost more upfront, the system would eventually save the University money while providing employees with more benefits.

Staff Development

The Human Resources office is preparing to launch the Professional Development Training program in October. Orientation presentations will be given as an introduction to all university employees. Melissa Hill, Recruitment and Retention Coordinator for UA, expresses that, "This is an exciting time to be part of the University of Alaska System. It's a win-win for employees and the University when administration invests in our future."
