The struggles they have faced have come both from inside and out, and between them.

PROLOGUE
Hagen, Sasha and Valeria, having two years before fled from their homeland of Dethrien (see Freedom! Saga Pre-history for more details), found themselves in the harsh land of Hubran. In an effort to earn some money to replace Hagen's lost longbow, they joined the Free Legion, a band of mercenaries. During that time, the two warriors earned themselves reputations as fierce warriors. Valeria's Flor-granted powers seemed somewhat muted in Hubran, but her companions did not seem to notice.
One day while Hagen and Sasha were out on a scouting mission, a sergeant of the legion (and his eleven friends) decided to pay a visit to Valeria. When she rebuffed his advances, he grew angry and violent. The only thing that saved her from a beating or worse was the intervention of a Lorish warrior named Jules, who had just recently come to the Free Legion. His intervention earned him a terrible beating, to include several broken bones, but saved Valeria. The soldiers decided they had had enough, and left the two alone. Valeria returned Jules to the tent she shared with Hagen and Sasha, and peformed a Miracle. "You have taken a beating for me, friend; I shall now return the favor." With that, she called upon the Gift of Flor and took Jules' wounds onto herself. It was almost enough to kill her.
When Hagen and Sasha returned to their tent, they found Jules tending Valeria. When they heard the tale of what was, they flew into a fierce rage and sought out the men who had done these things. Without discussion or remorse, they rose up and slew them to a man. They returned, and taking the already-healing Valeria and their new companion, fled to Lisorian.
Their travels found them in Salmyr, "the Town of Faiths", the greatest religious assemblage in the Land of Peace. This boded well for Valeria, as she studied at the Florian temple. Even Jules, in his search for Faith, found Salmyr interesting and educational. For Hagen and Sasha, however, the Lisorian was less than desirable. Warriors without a battle, they spent too much of their time drinking and brooding. When news of injustice came, they were quick to spring into action.
The tale came of young women being kidnapped in the north by strangers from the secluded land of Tever Sypere. Following this trail led them through several villages in the north of Lisorian, where Valeria performed another Miracle, saving the life of a young man that had been mortally wounded by the same kidnappers they were following. Unfortunately, the time it took the young woman to recover slowed them by at least a day, and the kidnappers escaped into treacherous Troll Pass--the only passage into Tever Sypere. Entering the Pass hot on the heels of their prey is where the Saga begins in earnest.
