Teaching:
My goal as an instructor of tango is to integrate fluid movement with a comfortable connection between partners,
incorporating deep sensitivity for the music and a high standard of etiquette toward other dancers. Body
awareness, fundamental technique, and continual exposure to the music are essential in achieving this goal.
I make a special effort to understand and teach both lead and follow roles equally. My teaching strategy is heavily
influenced by my experiences on the social dance floor and is ever-evolving to include new and better methods to
make learning more rewarding for students.
DJing:
As a DJ, I seek to gain the confidence of the dancers and eventually become transparent so the dancers can
focus deeply on their dancing, knowing that the music is going to be good the whole time. I rely on the chemistry
of the moment to guide my selections, often playing song by song as I tune in to the needs
of the dancers, keeping a big picture view of the overall energy arc of the event.
Two other skills are integral to my DJing: First, I find the best source material available, then clean and
edit the songs to sound as good as possible. Second, I have a firm understanding of sound reinforcement which
allows me to specify the most appropriate gear for any event and how best to set it up. The combination of
clean-sounding songs, properly set up sound equipment, and sensitive
DJing allows events to reach their full potential and produce memorable dance experiences.
I DJ weekly in Anchorage, and have DJ'd everything from short practicas to 9-hour all-night milongas at major
festivals/congresses and various local milongas in Portland, Denver, Berkeley, Los Angeles, Washington, DC,
San Francisco, Eugene, Montreal, New York City, Seattle, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Minneapolis, Maui, Seoul & Daejeon
(Korea).
