In early life Mrs. May was a member of the Lutheran Church, and when the family lived in Cannelton, Ind., she became a member of the Evangelical Church there and in this faith she remained true until her death.  On coming to Cloverport, she became interested in the Presbyterian Church and there her family attended its services.

1880 Saline Co. KS census, Pleasant Valley Township, enumerated 12 & 14 June 1880, by Adam R. Head, Supervisor Dist. #3, Enumerator Dist. #293, pg 14, lists:

Edward Leishen, age 15, laborer, born in IL, parents born in Germany, living with the Lemman Moon family.

Life story of Edward Lishen - January 2, 1865 to December 6, 1942

I was born January 2, 1865 at Warsaw, Illinois. Until I was 6 years old there was nothing of unusual interest. My brother 2 years older than myself and I were sent to Sunday School one sunday morning and meeting a group of boys we all went to the river (Mississippi) to swim instead of going to Sunday School.  My brother George got into water beyond his depth and drowned.  Knowing he was drowned I gathered up his clothes and ran home to tell my parents of the terrible tradegy that had befallen us.

In March following this (1872) my mother died leaving father with a family of 5 boys, the oldest being 11 years and 1 married sister. The following summer my father gave my baby brother and myself to a farmer (Jake Orth) for adoption in the State of Illinois. Two years later in 1874 we came to Kansas in a covered wagon, being on the road 7 weeks and locating in Saline County, Kansas which has been my home until the present time, July 2, 1935.

At the age of 10 I was put to work herding cattle and doing whatever work a boy of that age could do. In those days school was held for 3 months in the winter. I was allowed to go about one half of the time. Most of my education being received from newspapers in the home.  My foster parents were very strict and for the smallest misdemeanor I was severely punished. At the age of 11 I ran away from my foster parents in the night. All the clothes I had were a shirt, pair of overalls and a straw hat.

The first job I got was stacking wheat. I worked 1 week for one dollar. The next job I got was with a farmer from whom I was to get $75.00 for 1 year and 3 months schooling. I was with this farmer for about 3 months.   I was then offered a job with a Presbyterian Minister Rev. A. A. Morrison the first Presbyterian Minister in Salina. Here I was also to receive $75.00 and 3 months of school. Here I worked for nearly one year going to school 3 months of that time. This completed my schooling. This was also the happiest year of my childhood.

I then worked at various places until I was 14 years of age when I started to work for a man by the name of L.D. Moon.   I worked for him for 7 successive years. When I was 2l years old I began farming for myself.  My second year of farming was a complete failure due to drouth. Selling my farm equipment I went to Illinois to attend the wedding of my brother Albert and from there going on to visit my sister in Kentucky. This was my first visit with relatives for 17 years.

Coming back to Kansas a year later I worked at different jobs for a year. Then renting a farm for 5 years I married  Mary Effie Elston of our neighborhood on November 12, 1888.  On this farm our 3 children were born - Edna Mary on August 11, 1889, Carl Benjamin on August 27, 1691, and Russell Harry on September 6, 1894.

This farm on which we began to keep house and where we lived for 7 years was a log house with a dirt roof. The house contained 3 rooms and whenever it rained the roof leaked badly for several days after it stopped raining.  All of the time we lived on this farm we drove 18 miles to Salina every Saturday delivering our butter and eggs to private customers. We then moved to another farm 2 1/2 miles east of our first home. Moving in March of 1896. My wife died that summer leaving me with 3 small children the oldest 7 years and the youngest 3 years. My sister-in-law came from Kentucky and took Edna the oldest home with her and Russell the youngest went to St. George, Kansas with his Uncle Henry Lishen, Carl remaining at home with me.  I continued this way for 3 years. At that time I married Mary J. Arnold a widow with 2 boys, Rex and Elwood, on October 23, 1900.  To this marriage 2 children were born, Anna Laura on August 29, 1901 and Fred  B. on May 3, 1904.

After renting this farm for 6 years we bought it but only owned it for 5 months and sold it, buying another of 320 acres 5 miles from there at Twin Mounds. We lived on this farm for 3 years and then sold it buying a farm of 213 acres on Mulberry Creek but we never lived on this farm as we continued to rent our previous farm for 1 year.

We then sold our Mulberry Creek farm and bought a farm of 195 acres on the Saline river 1 mile east of Culver, living here for 3 years. We then sold all of the land lying south and east of the Saline River keeping the land north and west of the river (65 acres). In the year 1910 we bought a farm 1/2 mile north of Culver known as the Isaac Strode farm containing 70 acres. We live on this farm for 8 years educating our children in the Culver school.

Selling this we bought an 11 acre tract, part of it lying within the city limits of Culver, farming this and the 65 acres on the Saline River. After owing this for 8 years we traded this city property and the 65 acre river land for out present farm. A farm that we had previously lived on for 7 years and owned for 5 months. Moving on this farm we farmed it with Fred's help for 5 years. When Fred was married on April 8, 1931 we moved to Culver leaving him to farm the home place.

The above was told to me by my Father and recorded by me on July 2, 1935. The home place was sold to Carl B. Lishen in 193_ .    Fred B. Lishen then bought a farm 15 miles south east of Salina where he still resides.   Edward Lishen died December 6, 1942 at the age of 77 years and 11 months.  His wife Mary Jane died November 10, l950.  Her maiden name was Mary Jane Bean who was a granddaughter Rev. A. A. Morrison mentioned earlier in this articule.  Her mother Sarah Jane Morrison and Benjamin Swan Bean were the first couple to be married in Saline county.

Edward Lishen's father was Karl Leisgen of Warsaw, Illinois in Hancock county.  He and his wife were both born in Germany.  When they came to America they had two children, Annie and Charles.   The name was originally LEISGEN, when it was changed to Lishen is not known. The 5 sons of Karl Leisgen were Albert of Warsaw, Illinois, Louis of Peoria, Illinois, Charles of Clover Port, Kentucky, Henry of Culver, Annie May of Clover Port, Kenturky, and Edward.
