Wilderness Greenhouse was
built in Homer, Alaska in 2000. Our primary goal is to provide the community
with fresh vine ripened tomatoes and cucumbers cultivated using no chemicals,
herbicides or pesticides. Our varieties have included heirloom tomatoes and
cucumbers as well as commercial production varieties with new varieties added
each year.
Growing
methods:
We start our plants in
the small greenhouse in Early February. They are carefully tended and transplanted
until they move to the big greenhouse in Late April or early May. We transplant
into growing beds filled with our own blended soil mixture including native
soil, manure, compost, fresh kelp, bone meals and fish meals. We water with
drip irrigation providing optimum watering to the plant root base. We pollinate
every other day each plant individually and hope to hire bees in the future
to do a better job of pollinating! We begin harvesting ripe tomatoes in Late
June or early July and maintain production usually into September or October
with tomatoes sometimes available as late as Thanksgiving. With the goal of
expanding to other crops as well there is always an experimental crop or 2 growing
in the greenhouse as well. The labor force includes me- Tracy the owner, a volunteer
from WWOOF, the consumers and usually a neighbor or
two. Plans for Spring 2003 include a Spring Planting Party with BBQ and pot
luck!
Feel free to call for a
tour or find us at the Homer Farmers' Market
Every Saturday Late June to Late September!
