What are mukluks? Mukluks are an Alaskan Native Word meaning boots. There are a wide variety of styles that Alaskan Natives make. Mukluks are made with a Native Smoke-tanned moose hide, which are usually worn only when it is colder than --10 below zero. Mukluks are made witha 12-ounce Jencelite lining. The outer shell is made out out of Native smoke-tanned moosehide; or a velvet outer shell. We can use Athabascan floral-style beadwork or a ribbon trim for the banding around the top of the mukluk.
The beadwork takes us one month to make, since it is custom and handmade. The beadwork trim cost is high, depending on the style starting at $150.oo for each band, since they begin at one inch in width.
A popular style is the modern version. If we make a kuspuk or a parka for a customer, we will also make matching gauntlets and mukluks if they request it. This makes for a lovely look and is very popular withpeople here in Alaska.
The fur mukluks are made the same way as the fabric mukluks, replacing the fabric with fur. The fur we usually use is rabbit with a Jencelite lining. The soles are Native smoke tanned moosehide. The mukluk tops can be made with beadwork or ribbon work trim.
Each mukluk is custom-fitted and sized. Every mukluk is unique in design.
Prices start at $250.oo. Please email me at ravens.ruff.stuff@gmail.com for a direct quote.
