Anchorage
School Bonds 2003:
60% OFF, LIMITED TIME OFFER!
On April 1, Anchorage
voters will decide on $209 million of bonds for education projects on
three ballot propositions. Here is why we support these bonds:
- The Anchorage
School District developed these projects through a careful community
process and the list has the unanimous support of every
School Board Member, every Assembly Member, and every major candidate
for Mayor.
- In 2002 the Alaska
Legislature proposed, and state voters approved, a 60% match
for all school construction bonds for this year and next year only.
This is a one-time chance to build needed projects
for less than half the sticker price.
- The approval of
this bond will boost jobs and the economy in Anchorage
with the biggest single set of school construction contracts ever put
out at once.
- The $42 million
bond proposition covers the absolute basics: mechanical,
plumbing and electrical upgrades, code compliance, roof replacement
and emergency shelters.
- The $125 million
bond proposition covers construction all over the community,
including: Bartlett High School, Chugach Optional School, New Eagle
River High School, East High School, Polaris K-12 School, and Service
High School.
- The Eagle River
student population has grown to make a new high school there a necessity;
in addition, the building will provide space for new vocational
programs to prepare teens for work when they graduate.
- The $42 million
bond proposition covers construction of a new central administration
and training facility. This building will consolidate eight
administrative buildings spread all over town, with savings
of more than $1 million a year in employee travel time alone.
- The new central
building will allow the school district to build equity rather
than renting office and training space around the city, saving
additional money in the long run.
- Interest
rates have never been lower. Now is the time to borrow funds
for these long-term projects.
